2022 Mayer Tempranillo
German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, and winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch.
Other Reviews....
Fruit from the Pancake Creek vineyard in Gembrook. Deep purple. Mayer's second tempranillo was picked a bit earlier than the 2021 and fermented with fewer whole berries to give the wine more structure. Ripe and darkly fruited with aromas of black raspberries, fresh licorice and a little Sichuan pepper. Bursts onto the palate with ripe, juicy fruit flavours, which are immediately balanced by firm and savoury tannins. It'll probably age OK but, like the gamay, Timo made this to be chugged down (and enjoyed) with food on release. Drink 2022 - 2029.
