2022 Vasse Felix Heytesbury Chardonnay

Established in 1967 by regional pioneer Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix is Margaret River's founding wine estate. The winery has three distinct and exceptional sites including the Home vineyard in Wilyabrup, the Gnarawary vineyard in Wallcliffe and the Adams Road vineyard in Carbunup.
Heytesbury is a selection of the most striking barrels and unique vineyard blocks from the vintage at Vasse Felix. Handpicked fruit is whole bunch pressed direct to barrel for wild fermentation and 15 months of maturation on lees, with regular stirring to promote the completion of malolactic fermentation.

This vintage is challenging, manifested here as a bony framework with a phenolic edginess. Apricots, truffles, ginger and glazed quince. The acidity, despite the medium body, is all knees and elbows. The finish is not as smooth as it could be. And yet I feel that time will work wonders as things settle down. Just believe. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

It’s restrained, fine, a touch flinty and attractively textural, but the real fanfare is through the finish. This wine prosecutes its case in full. It tastes of stonefruit and tonic, grapefruit and cedar, with smoked herb and flint notes as whispers. It’s tight but it still manages to sing long. There are elements of both steel and chalk to the aftertaste, which add yet more to this wine’s loveliness. Drink 2025 - 2033+
