2023 Kalleske Moppa Shiraz
The fruit for this Shiraz is sourced from Kalleske’s certified organic Moppa vineyard with grapes coming from ten different blocks, the oldest of which was planted in 1961. Troy Kalleske reports that the 2023 vintage was an excellent one for quality, “Vintage 2023 has produced exceptional wines. It was the longest and latest on record, stretching from mid-March to early-May. The vines got off to a superb start with a wet and cool Spring providing plenty of sub-soil moisture for the growing season ahead. Summer typically brought average temperatures and was generally dry with occasional finite rain. The vines were in fantastic condition for slow and steady ripening into Autumn with its mild days, cool nights, and isolated light rain. Yields from 2023 are good and quality is excellent.”
Small dollops of Petit Verdot and Viognier were included in the blend to provide added complexity and give the wine a contemporary edge. Maturation took place in a combination of approximately 20% new French, American and Hungarian oak hogsheads for 13 months.
A plush, succulent Barossa Shiraz that possesses velvety tannins and a long, opulent finish.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting out of the glass with plenty of potency are dark plum, blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas which are complimented by vanillin oak, mocha and spice notes. Rich, weighty and densely concentrated, mouth coating flavours of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate swamp every corner of the palate. Superb depth and power with spicy vanillin oak, earthy mocha and fennel characters echoed across the back half. Plush and succulent it possesses velvety tannins and a long, opulent finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Other Reviews.....
Deep magenta-edged crimson with aromas of plum conserve, blueberry and boysenberry fruits cuts with hints of fine spice, cola, licorice, dark chocolate, fruitcake, pan juices, olive tapenade and earth. Full bodied and fruit pure with a powdery tannin backdrop and some nice sinew to accompany the plush dark and black fruits on the back-end. Drink by 2036.
