Veneto, Italy’s north-eastern region with Venice its capital, is home to the Pinot Grigio grape variety. Each year, since the 10th century, The Carnival of Venice is celebrated in the San Marco Square, with people dancing and feasting behind elaborate and exotic masks which is where this wine takes it’s name - La Maschera (the mask). Protected from the harsh northern European climate by the Alps, these cooler climes are somewhat similar to the coastal maritime regions of the Limestone Coast where the grapes for this wine were harvested.
A consistently excellent Pinot Grigio, the juice for this wine was wild fermented on full solids in old French oak where it remained on lees for 6 months to enhance the texture. A small amount of Viognier was also included in this years release.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Delightful pear, rosewater and red apple aromas fill the nostrils followed by hints of Turkish delight and ginger spice. Delicious pear, apple and apricot flavours carry beautiful shape across the mouth watering palate with some delicate musk and ginger infusions lying underneath. Crisp acidity with a long moreish finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.
