In 1979 Mike Peterkin produced Australia’s first Semillon Sauvignon Blanc. Working at Cullen’s at the time, the wine went on to win a trophy at the Perth Royal Show. He never claimed any originality for the idea, he simply borrowed it from the French. In 1980 he was so convinced of the blend’s potential in Margaret River he devoted a third of the Pierro plantings to the varieties.
The 2023 L.T.C. is made up of 50% Semillon, 43% Sauvignon Blanc and 7% Chardonnay. Twenty five percent of the blend was fermented and matured in new and one & two year-old French oak barrels for a period of 2-3 months with the balance fermented and matured in stainless steel.
Brilliant water like colour with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Intense passionfruit, lime and green apple scents burst out of the glass trailed by some delicate white peach and subtle grassy notes. Scrumptious passionfruit, green apple, lime and fleshy white peach fruits are underscored by mouth watering acidity. Fantastic concentration, drive and textural volume with delicate herbaceous grassy characters and zingy minerals flowing through the back half. Finishes dry and crisp with a long zippy aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.
Alc. 13.5%

Other Reviews…..
50/43/7% semillon/sauvignon blanc/chardonnay. There’s a lot of energy and drive to this blend – it works so well. Enticing with its lemon-lime flavours, lemon zest and freshly sliced ginger/galangal. Some texture across the otherwise linear palate, electrifying acidity seals the deal.

It’s Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, with a little touch of Chardonnay.

Lime, lime rind, white pepper, aniseed, sweet snapped snow pea, some cream and spice. It’s bright, pops with mixed citrus of some sweetness and intensity, has some flinty texture, a kiss of dried herbs, a subtle saline character, and finishes long and crisp. Such a pleasing and refreshing wine. Lovely. Drink 2024 - 2031+

Such a good year for white varieties and this consistently first-rate wine has delivered again, but with the addition of even more natural crunchy vibrant fruit thanks to the vintage. The palate is more intense than previous vintages but still with that structure and precision that comes with the approach of using a combination of semillon and sauvignon, with a light touch of chardonnay. This really is a terrific wine. A cracker.
