2023 Pooley Pinot Noir
The growing season began with consistent spring rainfall, fostering strong, healthy canopies and plentiful bunch numbers. Mild conditions persisted into summer, with few days exceeding 25°C. Early autumn brought sunny days and cool oceanic evenings, marking the start of veraison. This was followed by a return of warm temperatures, leading to a prolonged and leisurely vintage. The fruit matured slowly, developing integrated and balanced phenolic profiles.
This 2023 Pinot Noir is a blend of Cooinda Vale and Butcher’s Hill, with contributions from smaller parcels within the Coal River Valley. It underwent wild fermentation with 5% whole bunches over 14 days, followed by a 7-day post-ferment maceration in 2.5-tonne open ferment stainless steel tanks, with daily pump-overs. The wine was matured for 11 months in French oak, with 10% being new oak, using a mix of 90% puncheons (500L) and 10% barriques (225L).
