Balcones Rum Cask Finished Cask Strength Texas Single Malt American Whisky (750ml)

Balcones started distilling rum back in 2013, so with their in-house cooperage program, it makes sense that they're re-using rum casks to finish whisky. The result is one of the most rum-infused malts on the market without compromising distillery character or being overly sweet. Past the initial whiff of alcohol you get aromas of raisin cake, banoffee pie, chico lollies and dry cola underpinned by bustling wood spices which complement the rum notes. As always from Balcones, this is a big, bittersweet experience that ramps up the intensity as it goes. Muted rum like sugars enter with suggestions of dates, fruit cake and rum-balls; spices climax at the finish. The rum lingers with gingerbread, cola and light molasses. It could be better integrated, but remember this is high strength and Waco matured, so consistent with the house style.
