Balcones Single Barrel Cask Strength Texas Single Malt American Whisky (700ml) - 66.7%
This is the cask strength / single cask version of Balcones single malt, not to be confused with their 'Classic' edition that typically arrives at what many might consider cask strength or near to. Apart from similar looking private bottlings, the labels on both the Cask Strength and Classic are very similar, so at a glance, it's easy to mistake the two. The ABVs will also vary from batch to batch, however the uncut strength for any Balcones is typically extreme (think 65%+), which is the tell tale signature to differentiate by. Balcones single barrel selections aim to showcase the contrasts from one barrel to the next and the way the wood and whisky respond to the Waco climate. Hungarian oak, x Bourbon wood and French oak are common, but they'll alternate between releases, depending on which barrel performs best. These beasts often rate highly amongst critics, and if you like your whisky incendiary and intense, this will fit the bill. Having said that, the batch we tasted handled the massive alcohol with aplomb while delivering an exuberant malt richness that easily matched the considerable oak. The result is a potent whisky, balanced yet bursting with personality and flavour. 66.7% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
