Produced in the famous Pays d'Auge region of Normandy, Boulard is the result of a family tradition dating back to 1825. To produce their Calvados, the company selects 120 varieties of apples from local orchards which are then pressed and fermented in tanks for 1 - 3 months. After this period the cider is ready for double distillation which involves two successive heating stages. On leaving the still, the Calvados has an alcohol level of around 70% - too strong for commercial consumption. The extreme alcohol content is reduced during the maturation process where the wood tannins gradually blend with the fruity aromas of the Calvados also bestowing upon it a golden amber colour.

Tasting Note: Born from a blend of Pays d'Auge Calvados whose age varies from 3 - 5 years. Deep gold colour with pale gold green hue. Wonderfully 'warming' nose of fresh toffee apple and vanillan oak followed by an unusual but very appealling end note of liquorice bullets. Clean, silky smooth entry with velvet mouthfeel and texture. The spirit is soft yet posesses good heat. Toffee apple and oak re-appear on the palate and are followed by a dry apple cider finish. Light aftertaste of baked Johnathan apples, subtle French oak and dry cider. A delightful Calvados! Savour this one on its own or drink as an aperitif with tonic or on the rocks. 40% alc./vol.

Further notes... Amber. Buttered nuts, dried fruit, spice, and shellac aromas lead to a delicate, supple, and dry medium-bodied palate with subtle baked and dried apple and raw nut flavors. Finishes purely with a dry, spicy apple cider fade and a touch of varnish-like minerality. An artisanal and fairly elegant style.
