Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 5.1 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Bruichladdich's whiskies are noted for generally been unpeated. However, they do diverge into more traditional Islay territory with several bottlings including their ridiculously peaty 'Octomore'. This monster of the whisky world takes its place as one of the peatiest ever created at 169ppm. If you follow Jim Murray, previous releases have consistently scored in the 96 point range (not too bad for a 5 year old whisky!) This is another Bruichladdich bomb, but not in the way you might expect. Look out all you hairy chested peat freaks - you may have met your soul mate! 59.5% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: [Sample taken from a 20ml vial] Very pale straw gold with a greenish tinge. Shy at first, gradually opening up in stages. First impressions are of smoked salmon over burnt raisin toast. A serious depth quickly becomes apparent. No doubting this is a hefty, brooding dram as the lethargic, weighty aromas have to be coaxed out of the glass. Further sniffs excite a gentle prickle. Second pass leads towards heavy vanilla cream and choc fudge. Third time around yields hints of manure and composted matter, followed by more vanilla creme-caramel. One could go on. In the mouth, it's the astonishingly delicate entry that's the first thing that strikes you - remember this is well over standard strength. The palate tsunamis in slow motion starting with soft vanilla cream, and a vaguely fruity edge that seems to roll over the tongue with a unique texture lying somewhere between fine wine tannin and oil. It's difficult to discern exactly what's happening here through the fog. Cascades of peat towards the finale momentarily repeat the choc fudge / smoked fish notes. Stunning balance and length, although the profile does seem to drop off at this threshold (almost losing a point), it soon rebounds with a subtle smokey, sweet tobacco fade that you'll be tasting for hours. A gentle giant. A unique whisky experience. Everything about it seems ephemeral yet profound. 51.5% Alc/Vol.
