Distilleria Alpina was founded in 1930 by Agostino Pontillo. Their Amaro is based on Alpine herbs and roots and includes 22 botanical infusions, though not all have been revealed by the company. New owners, the Sembenotti brothers from Trento state that rhubarb, gentian, clary sage, juniper berries, elderflower and china calissaia (chincona) are in the mix. Alpino aims at a medium-bitter style that's robust, herbal and earthy with a delicate piney/mint lift that's typical of the freshness of many Alpine amaros (more citrus-driven specimens are found in the south). Warming alcohol contributes depth while subtle sweet spices and bitter gentian make for a balance that's close to perfect. The finish is long and only mildly bitter. It's very moreish stuff. Enjoy on its own poured over ice or in a spritz with soda and citrus. 18.5% Alc./Vol.
