Glencadam Origin 1825 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
A no age statement release from Glencadam named after the year in which they were founded. It comes matured in American white-oak ex-bourbon barrels, then finished in barrels which previously held Oloroso sherry. Positive reviews, and the price is right. Sounds like a new everyday drinker!
Other reviews... New in 2016, this is an NAS entry-level bottling for the brand, matured in bourbon barrels before spending a finishing period in oloroso sherry butts. Sweet and malty on the nose, a hint of mash, then pineapple. Becoming more floral, with violets. The palate offers soft fruit notes, cocoa powder, light sherry, and mixed nuts. The finish is medium in length, with milky coffee and soft spices. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Gavin Smith 2017
...No age statement, that famous trick with founding years and such, 40% vol. and a sherry finish… Pretty much the lowest form of marketing creativity if you ask me. But indeed this might be good, if a little, say despairing. Colour: straw. Nose: porridge, oatcakes, and gravel at first nosing, then more sweetish barley character, not unpleasant at all. Some pears and touches of varnish suggest this is quite young indeed. Mouth: good, sweet, malty, with some vanilla, pineapple syrup and some raisins, plus some peppery oak. Apple pie, some cinnamon, a touch of caraway. Finish: not that short, creamy, barleyish, peppery. Comments: I’m not going to write a novel about this baby, but I think it’s rather fair and honest. 78 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Nose : Sweet orchard fruits and blossom honey mingled with baked apple and hints of cinnamon. Palate : Layers of fresh banana and pear fruit followed with sweet barley sugars, dried pineapple and soft cake spices. Finish : Mellow and fruity with notes of pear drops, lemon drizzle cake and candied peels.
