Loch Lomond Spearhead Single Grain Scotch Whisky (700ml)

When it comes to low ABV, NAS grain whiskies, expectations aren't high, especially when the marketing is aimed at the cocktail market. Spearhead’s website urges us to forget typical whisky stereotypes, declaring it to be “more mixable than your traditional tipple.” Like other single grains, the brand is distilled in a column still which some believe produces whisky with an average mouthfeel. Spearhead's a bit different because it's made at Loch Lomond where they employ 100% malted barley instead of 'lesser' grains like wheat or corn. It makes all the difference. Add to that a combination of infrared and fire-toasted American oak barrels and you have a winning formula. The aromas grab you with generous notes of poached orchard fruits (ripe red apples) young Bourbon, banana cake and dried coconut and translate nicely into a soft, rounded texture with ripe Summer fruits and an easy finish. Toasted marshmallows, coconut and spice add balance. It almost tastes like single malt. Prepare to be surprised. 43% Alc./Vol.
