An old Campbeltown distillery, Longrow was first distilled and re-launched at Springbank distillery in 1973. Each year the distilling equipment at Springbank is cleaned and Longrow is made for a short time, double distilled in the traditional Scottish manner from malt dried entirely over a peat fire. For lovers of the Islay styles, Longrow is amongst the peatiest whiskies available, having one of the highest phenol contents (although bottlings have been reported to vary dramatically in this respect). Its limited availability has inspired an obsessive cult following, also making it highly collectable, though sometimes pricey.
This, the third edition of the much admired Springbank/Longrow Red range is completely matured in Port casks. The winner of "Best Lowland Single Malt" at the 2015
World Whisky Awards, only 9000 bottles were released globally. We were so impressed, we've secured the entire Australian allocation. (It sounds like a lot, but it's not - we have less than 30 to sell). Likely one of the best whiskies you'll taste for 2015. Don't miss out!
Tasting note: Deep copper with flashes of rusty red and thick legs down the glass. Penetrating aromas offer a sensational synergy of white pepper, vanilla, oatmeal biscuit and creamy peat. Develops more of a cocoa edge with further time in the glass, before the briney, sooty peat returns along with hints of boot polish and Fisherman's Friend. Great complexity. Terrific concentration with the high ABV countered by creamy peat and vanilla. Fisherman's Friend, choc fudge cake, drying to finish with a fresh lozenge / menthol tobacco fade. Longrow is almost faultless of late. Love it! 51.8% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... I know some people who will take a bottle of this to bed with them....to cuddle rather than drink...too in your face. 85.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2015
Notes from the producer: " Nose: Beautiful sweet fresh summer fruits. Creamy with a hint of peat and classic cigar box notes. Palate: Smooth and elegant, particularly for an 11 year old. Good peat influence accompanied by the juicy current notes of lingonberries. Finish: A soft oaty creaminess provokes thoughts of brie and cranberry on oatcakes. Long and sweet." 51.8% Alc./Vol.
