Brand owners, Bacardi, decided to cease production of Patron's now coveted coffee liqueur in 2021, only to announce its re-release in April 2024 as a one-time offer (according to Patron's marketing team). Tequila is seeing rapid growth and incredible momentum – not just in the United States, so the reason for discontinuing the product came as no surprise: The company wanted to dedicate all of its output to “growing and protecting production and supply of our core super and ultra-premium tequilas.” In short, the liqueur was reported to be a very small profit contributor and not worth the effort. Other brands have tried to fill the void, but none seem to have attained the quasi-cult-like status of Patron's original, with bottles now selling for several hundreds of dollars. It's a blend of premium tequila and a natural essence of Arabica coffee beans sourced from the Mexican states of Veracruz and Chiapas, the former said to provide intense toasted flavour and the latter delicate acidic notes. Part of the drink's appeal is that it's more like a coffee flavoured tequila than a liqueur. As a result, the taste is on the drier side instead of being overly sweet while the higher proof brings out the flavour of the coffee essence without completely smothering the tequila. It's excellent for sipping as well as an essential ingredient in cocktails like the Espresso Martini or as a unique and delicious dessert topping. A cursory scan of the web reveals most outlets in the US and the UK have long since sold out. We've managed to source a little more, but this may well be your final opportunity to score a bottle at a reasonable price. Do it before it flies off the shelves and disappears again. 35% Alc./Vol.
