2022 Double Gold Winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for Small Batch Bourbon.

For a brand that was established in 2018, Penelope Bourbon have hit the ground running. Awarded three Double Platinum Medals, along with ‘Blender of the Year’ by the ASCOT Awards in 2022, the company has now been acquired by American distilling giant MGP in a deal worth over US$100 million. This private release was selected for Whiskey Hunt Australia with help from Penelope's Co-Founder and Master Blender, Danny Polise. The very same batch was submitted to the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition where it snapped up a Double Gold and Best in Class, so the current offer is no slouch. We received a 40ml sample. It takes time for the aromas to rally scents of grilled corn, vanillan oak and low-key peachy fruitiness. If complexity isn't a strong point on the nose, there's plenty to enjoy in the sleek delivery. At 57.5%, batch 22-302 is one sultry cask strength Bourbon - a relatively high wheat content (21%) may be partly responsible for that. Oily grains, sweet oak, wisps of vanilla wafer and caramel weave through a silky mid-palate, wrapping up with delicious flashes of cherry chocolate, cocoa, marshmallow and a kick of warming alcohol. The majority of the blend is around five years old and its youth remains apparent, but overall the whiskey tastes older than it actually is.
