Redwood Empire Grizzly Beast Bottled in Bond Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
Redwood Empire's 100 proof version is produced from 66% corn, 23% rye, 7% wheat and 4% malted barley, aged five years in 200 litre barrels, toasted and charred to level three. Bitter peel, wood shavings and tingling alcohol are evident on the nose before settling into fruity-vanilla territory. Despite the high ABV, it's a middle-weight, accessible style; If at first the wood feels a little too assertive and grippy, work it around your mouth to extract sweeter notes of cherry and ripe peach. Oak and spices rally at the finish, leaving the impression of bitter dark chocolate. The label references the Grizzly Giant, a massive Sequoia in Yosemite National Park. Batch 002 tasted. 50% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… All manners of orange are here, with orange peel, Creamsicle, and a hint of orange soda right up front. This citrus is joined by sweeter elements: a drizzle of maple syrup and inviting wood spice. The palate is creamy, and that tangy, zesty citrus carries on, though there's also blueberry cobbler, a burst of Red Hots, and buttered toast sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. A moderate-length finish balances oak with tart red fruit. (3,000 bottles) 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com
