Roger Groult Whisky Cask Finish 9 Year Old Calvados Apple Brandy (700ml)

New as of 2017, another of Groult's experiments in brandy maturation is this whisky cask finish. Suitably, the barrels were sourced from a distillery in Brittany, France with the finishing period lasting just a few months.

Tasting note: Deep gold. Orchard fruits are evident, but the aroma seems smothered rather than enhanced by the finishing. Extra vanilla? Possibly a touch of smoke? On the palate it's more typical, with baked apple and late hints of cider, but pulls up short. 46% Alc./Vol.
