This is the newly packaged version of the Sullivans Cove Double Cask, presented in a more substantial box that holds up to transport - appropriate for a whisky that's become a legend in its own right.
Note: Cask numbers will vary and will not necessarily be the same as the tasting note below.
The latest releases from this distillery (established in 1994) mark a welcome departure from many previous expressions that were frequently sabotaged by hessian bag, burnt rubber and/or sulphur-like notes. All three bottlings (Double Wood, American Oak Single Cask and French Oak Single Cask) are clean, complex and come highly recommended. The Double Wood is two parts - one matured in a combination of French Oak (11 years), the other matured for 11 years in American Oak. It offers a wonderfully fruity whisky experience, particularly on the nose which finds comparison with Nant's Unpeated or Aberfeldy's 12 year old.
Tasting note: [BATCH DC57 tasted] Pale gold / straw colour. A delightful bouquet opens with attractive notes of nashi pear and strawberry alongside hints of cinnamon and vanilla. After several minutes in the glass the malt starts to penetrate the gorgeous fruit notes, but only marginally. Light, soft entry. The medium dry, malty palate delivers good concentration with vanilla and clove followed by a subtle fruity burst (stewed pear?) Crisp, mildly spicy finish. Vanilla wafer aftertaste is clean and refreshingly dry with a hint of cocoa and fruitiness returning late.
