The Glenturret 2022 Release 7 Year Old Peat Smoked Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

Distillery records show Glenturret used peat dug from Octhertye Estate in the early 1800s. The present day set up permits the production of peated and non-peated spirit at different times of the year from the same stills. Taking advantage of that, Glenturret have produced this expression. American oak sherry seasoned casks build the confectionery sweetness from the new-make while refill casks contribute smokiness. Saying that, the peat input isn't anything like the medicinal / maritime attack found in many Islays. Instead, the effect feels more attuned to mesquite smoke (think Mezcal) alongside earthy farmyard notes with a gentle, oily-fruitiness developing at the finish. Complexity isn't high, but Glenturret succeeds in delivering a very elegant, dry aperitif alternative to traditional heavy-peat styles. 44% Alc./Vol.
