The Macallan 1971 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
The huge range of Vintage Macallans on offer have been selected from The Macallan distilled in the 1930s and bottled in the 1970s, and also from a selection of the very best casks at the peak of their maturation complexity from the Vintage years 1926 to 1972. Three vintages from this latter period are now available in Australia – the 1964, 1967 & the 1971.
In the case of the 1971 Macallan, thirty years old, only 536 bottles were ever produced and the Australian allocation amounts to no more than a handful. Needless to say, these are collectors Macallan’s and as such, it is likely that the destiny of most bottles will be to accumulate both dust and value in equal measure, never to be uncorked.
Bottled in 2002 the natural mahogany colour of the 1971 Macallan, complex and spicy in character, indicates maturation in a first fill sherry cask. The nose and taste are full of mixed dried fruits and wood spices, (cloves, ginger, nutmeg) with a long finish. One of only two butts selected as the best current expressions of this year, cask 4280, filled on the 3rd of May 1971, was bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtration. This whisky derives all of its colour naturally from thirty years in the cask.
Tasting notes: Rich Rosewood in colour. Aromas of Parma violet sweets with light fruits and citrus orange. Fruity and orangey palate with a light oiliness and malty cereal note followed by citrus orange and dried fruits. No woody dryness. After taste of heavily toasted oak wood. Medium length and vibrant.
55.9%Alc/vol (Natural Cask Strength)
