Cape Byron Stone Beer Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Cape Byron continues as it began in 2016 - as a family owned and run operation situated on a Macadamia farm. Scotch Whisky Master, Jim McEwan is significant for his early involvement, alongside current distiller and owner, Eddie Brooks. Cape Byron's house style has been compared to Bruichladdich's "Classic Laddie" - not unwarranted, nor surprising. Full-size, 200 litre American oak ex-bourbon barrels are the mainstay, with multiple casks vatted for each release. The whiskies mature in a cool, damp environment and are bottled non-chill filtered. Here's another in a series of 'experiments', this time following a tradition more aligned with Northern European distilleries - maturation in x-beer casks. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels previously filled with Stone & Wood's rich and distinctive 'Stone Beer', a dark porter brewed with wood-fired stones, the resulting whisky offers notes of crème brûlée and indulgent vanilla custard, followed by a burst of fresh orange zest evolving into mocha and tiramisu. It concludes with a lingering honey note, leaving a sweet and satisfying finish. 46% Alc./Vol.

    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Château de Laubade only release these Armagnacs after a minimum of 15 years of ageing, each vintage beautifully presented in a hardwood box - in this case making the perfect gift for a 1995 anniversary of any kind! Anticipate deep, powerful flavours including candied prunes, dried fruits like figs, vanilla and coffee, all framed by fine oak tannins.

More than eighty different vintages are currently being matured in Laubade’s cellars. The oldest vintage is from 1888. Each year tells a story dealing with the ongoing climate changes, cask quality and the cellar's temperature - all of which define the vintage identity. A culmination of rich know-how and dedication to quality from three generations, the Lesgourgues family continue to run their own 260 acre property. Planted to Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche & Baco, each variety is distilled seperately. Notably, Laubade remains alone in coopering their own Gascon oak casks. Sustainable agriculture is also the standard here (manure is produced by 600 ewes). 40% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

    Cellar: Drink now - 10 Years (2025-2035)

The Bruce was the first wine Izway produced and since it’s inception in 2003 it has always been unashamedly Barossan with rich fruit, power, depth, texture and structure all hallmarks of this outstanding wine. Fruit was sourced from four different Barossa Valley vineyards located in the sub districts of Koonunga Hill, Ebenezer, Greenock and Moppa with vines varying in age between 12 to 126 years old.

Rich, super dense and exceptionally concentrated this is powerhouse Barossa Shiraz at it’s best.

Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart and an equally deep dark red black hue. Intense dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas soar out of the glass with some smoked meat, vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes also evident. Rich, super dense and exceptionally concentrated, the palate is a skyscraper of flavour, packed end to end with lavish dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and dark chocolate fruits. Boasting enormous power and torque notions of vanillin oak, subtle earthy mocha and delicate spicy fennel are detailed across the back half. Opulently textured with a velvet smooth yet underlying firm tannin structure it has an explosive finish that’s laden with decadent plush fruit.

    Other Reviews....
Leo Buring Leonay. The mention of that name is enough to get any riesling lover standing to attention. Named after winemaker and the rather awesomely monikered Leo Buring Hermann Paul Leopold Buring. Anyone that has said "Winemaking isn't a matter of life or death – it's much more important than that!" is OK by me. The wine is a singularity of limey goodness. Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime juice and green apple sorbet with hints of Christmas lily, clover blossom, crushed quartz and lemongrass. Precise and focused with a tubular core pushed across the palate by fine, vivid acidity with an umami blush on the exit. If there was a Mount Rushmore for Aussie riesling, old Leo's smiling face would be the first to be chiseled into the granite. Drink by 2040.

Santis Malt Dreifaltigkeit Edition Single Malt Swiss Whisky (500ml)
    SWITZERLAND
    $149. 99
    Bottle
    $1799.88 Dozen
    ABV: 52%

'Dreifaltigkeit' means trinity in German, and this whisky apparently gets its name from a local Swiss mountain peak. Reportedly the barley is smoked in multiple ways – first wood-smoked in beech and oak woods, then re-smoked with local peat from the Appenzell Highmoor. It's said to be a polarising experience, even for peat freaks. An earlier edition was awarded Jim Murray's “European Whisky of the Year” for 2010. 52% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The kind of smokey infusion which just makes you purr with happiness. One of my favourite peat styles: a kind of mix between cattle sheds and bacon frying in the pan... Thick, chewy and frankly magnificent... such a long finale. The smoke pulses, the spices tingle and the fruit allays with the barley and the growing oak for a deeply pleasing sweet-dry interplay... Santis back to its most brilliant... If you see a bottle grab it and ask questions later. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Peat cut from the moors in Appenzell is used to make peated malt that is then matured in beer casks. The nose has rich woodsmoke, leather, charred oak, bruised orchard fruit, and a mild pepperiness. Unsweetened chocolate, dark fruit, clove, and ginger lead to an intense spicy peak, diluting to leave hazelnut ganache, chocolate brownie, and a gentle smoky character. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

[circa 2021 bottling] We're in Appenzell and unless you're a native German speaker, please try to say 'Dreifaltigkeit'. Bravo! Indeed that means 'trinity' in German. This was matured in old beer casks, a typical set-up at Säntis. Colour: deep gold/amber. Nose: with bags of pencil shavings and tons of pinewood chips, this should work well as a spread over your barbecued ribs. Seriously, I think this is awesome, totally deviant in a great way, and more and more on smoked and grilled bacon. Spectacular, I can't wait to check what will happen once water's been added. With water: same but with even more pinewood. A little aquavit, perhaps, Schinken häger… ever heard of  Schinken häger? Mouth (neat): total extreme fun. Tons of smoked bacon, litres of Jägermeister and Fernet Branca, and this feeling of drinking sauna oil. With water: more tar, myrtle liqueur (first time I'm finding this much myrtle), salty bacon… Finish: very long. Perhaps a tad too long in fact, you'll need a break before you pour another whisky. Yes, of course this is whisky. Comments: utter fun! Isn't this Whiskyfun? 86 points - whiskyfun.com

    SWITZERLAND
    $124. 99
    Bottle
    $1499.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Other reviews... It is well known that I am no advocate of beer barrel matured whisky, not least because the bitterness of the hops can cause havoc with the overall balance. Santis, though, are in a league of their very own - especially when it appears to create a creamy hop-less stout like this with sugars appearing from every angle. 92 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Why is it that so many great beer-producing European nations, many of them with Germanic roots, didn't progress to whisky making? Appenzeller brewery makes this malt using old beer casks, and they have softened the edges of the malt and given it a liquid honey frame around which woody-earthy notes and unripe dates create an intriguing mix. A long, long way from the Alps to the Scottish Highlands, but a lofty malt nevertheless. [2011 bottling] 80 points -whiskyadvocate.com

    SWITZERLAND
    $119. 99

    ABV: 43%

Other reviews... Such an attractive, seductive nose... the fruit is so delicate it seems the oak may break through any moment. Or a rush of intense malt might happen along. But it doesn't... a sublime redcurrant freshness to that coats the palate. Muscovado sugars act as an anchor keeping the barley, fruit and charming oak in place... unquestionably the most elegant malt I have tasted from this distillery. The perfect pre-prandial whisky, even when given the full Murray method of tasting, its growth in the glass always remains studied and perfectly balanced. Such charm. 94 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

Made from Alpine water and barley harvested from one of Europe’s highest growing areas, this was double matured in beer casks and red wine barrels. Spicy and fruity aromas, with apple, cranberry, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and roasted chestnut. Mouth-coating, with bright apple flavors, cherry, malt, and pepper, then showing its darker side with hints of dark toffee, chocolate, blackberry, and leather. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

A relatively young release by Delord's standards. Situated in Bas-Armagnac, Delord's distillery is to be found in the village of Lannepax, the ancestral home of the Delord family. SWITZERLAND
    $174. 99
    Bottle
    $2099.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Part of the distillery's flagship series, Alpstein comes matured in a range of casks, varying with each release. XIX started life in x-beer barrels followed by a sherry cask finish. Aged for a total of seven years, these limited editions are released in runs of around 2200 bottles. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Fabulous sherry trifle on the nose and a marvelously confident delivery makes for a storming start to this flavoursome malt. Indeed, despite the healthy sherry influence on the delivery, the malt makes its presence felt in both the flavour and texture. However, the bitterness on the finish, almost rubbery at times, compromises the overall balance. That said, the nose and delivery combo is sublime. 86.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024

[IV Edition tasted 2013] Whisky Advocate is moving out into the unknown, turning over the rocks and discovering beautiful and unfamiliar creatures like this one. In tiny distilleries in Switzerland, Sweden, and, er, Swansea, they're throwing the rule book up in the air and creating new whiskies based on how it falls. This has spent four years in a beer barrel and then a year in a port cask, and it's fabulous. Think licorice, aniseed, and cherry-flavored soda. Then add cream, fruit…and yowza! 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Interesting background. The vines date back to the late 1800s but were replanted on this Paracombe vineyard in 1990. This is a limited release wine from the best barrels. The fruit is both intense and refined. After vinification it goes into new French oak for 36 months. So, it gets a decent hit, but this is where those century old vines do their thing, ensuring the balance and restraint to avoid a heavy hand of oak. It’s seamlessly and beautifully integrated with a light cedary impact that works well with the intense plummy fruit. Will handle extended cellaring. Drink 2024-2042.

1975 Darroze Domaine de Bellair 49 Year Old Cask Strength Bas Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $550. 00
    Bottle
    $6600.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45.5%

Where else can you obtain a 49 year old wood aged spirit for well under $1000 besides Armagnac? This addition to Darroze's ongoing 'Unique Collection' of single vineyard, cask strength brandies is one of the oldest releases to date: distilled in 1975 and bottled in October 2024, look for keynotes of fig jam and brioche apple pie in a long and complex delivery. 45.5% Alc./Vol.

Francis and Marc Darroze roam the best estates and terroirs of Bas Armagnac in search of the most beautiful and distinctive brandies. Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars. These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

First produced in 1862, re-launched around 2015 and named after the Spanish word for Gold, Bacardi Oro is the premium blend from the Bacardi stable based in Peurto Rico. Fourteen young rums make up the mix which is aged for just one to two years adding subtle notes of toffee and muscovado sugar. Filtered once through charcoal for smoothness, expect a lighter, drier style made for mixing.

Experimental de Christian Drouin Foursquare Cask Finish 19 Year Old Calvados (700ml)
    Normandy, FRANCE
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.8%

Drouin's Experimental Pays d'Auge Calvados is described by its creator as "one of the most intense and rich expressions we've produced in this range." After exploring the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Martinique, Guillaume Drouin was inspired to age a seventeen year old brandy in French oak rum barrels from the famous Foursquare Distillery in Barbados. A seventeen month spell was followed by three months in freshly toasted barrels. The rum imparts brown sugar and vanilla notes, while the toasted barrels enhance roundness and structure. The resulting calvados has aromas of ripe apples, vanilla, caramel and brown sugar, with flavours of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and spice - an exotic marriage and a perfect balance between two worlds. 2396 bottles produced. 46.8% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers...  On the nose, this calvados awakens the senses with its captivating aromas of ripe and roasted apples, delicate vanilla, creamy caramel and brown sugar. On the palate, it reveals all its richness with suave and harmonious flavors of tropical fruits, dark chocolate and sweet spices. The finish is long and powerful, opening with notes of pine nuts and almond.

The aroma and flavour bring to mind traditional desserts while the botanical and citrus tones of Licor 43 are perfectly integrated, enhancing the vanilla flavour. Richly fruited yet youthfully inky with a bright, chalky medium length finish.

Inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced red to black currant and mulberry scents fill the olfactory senses followed by some red plum, vanillin cedar, tobacco and dried herb notes. Rich with a youthful inkiness to the mid weighted palate, ripe red to black currant, mulberry and red plum fruits are framed by a sturdy tannin structure and lively acidity. Vanillin cedar, earthy tobacco and spicy dried herb elements sit in the background. Bright, chalky medium length finish.

It feels cool and relaxed with an abundance of varietal/Margaret River flavours: cassis, mulberries, a dusting of cocoa powder, nori and lots of fresh herbs plus eucalyptus with cedary, sweet oak. Medium bodied and supple with fleshy fruit across the palate and textural, refined tannins. It’s a lovely drink now but will last some distance. Drink by 2034.

Juicy red fruited Grenache that has a fresh, lively feel.

The fruit for the 2023 Farmer’s Heart Grenache was selected from a range of diverse sub-regions within McLaren Vale. These vineyards boast an age range spanning from 26 to 130 years old. Notably, 48% of the blend originates from vines over a century old, while 74% is derived from those over 95 years in age.

Deep dark red black tinged colour with a purple red tinged hue. Aromas of raspberry and red liquorice infused with white pepper sail through the nostrils with some fresh herb, earthy graphite and spice notes also evident. Juicy red cherry, red raspberry and red liquorice fruits decorate the mid weighted palate that has a fresh, lively feel. Extending across the back half are notions of vanillin spice, earthy graphite and pepper. Understated in its power it has good tension and a sturdy yet polished tannin framework. The long finish vibrant, succulent and peppery.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

This came off mainly old vines, with 74% 95 years of age or more; matured in older oak. Ripe, but a product of the cool year, this drinks towards mid-weight, with strawberry, wild raspberry, sour cherry, damson, pomegranate and medicinal herbs coiled into a thoughtful and intricate warp and weft of tannin. There’s a pleasing sour-fruited tension to this, which complements the grip, the combination aching for food. The ripeness is à point, the structure bravely savoury and compelling. It’s delightful, but no pushover. Drink by 2030.

Ardbeg Anamorphic Committee Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $299. 00
    Bottle
    $3588.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48.2%

The point of difference in Ardbeg's latest Committee release sees the cask heads scored to expose more of the wood's surface area. The cask ends were heavily toasted using the distillery's 'high mocha' toasting process and the inside of the barrels were charred. The process is said to temper the briny overtones, ramp up hidden chocolaty sweetness and magnify sensations of mocha. Bottled non chill filtered at 48.2%. Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The story with Anamorphic revolves around barrel charring. After removing the heads of classic Ardbeg bourbon casks, they were scored deeply to expose more wood and then intensely charred before being filled. Jack Daniel’s did a similar trick with its Sinatra Select bottlings. Does Ardbeg need more wood on it? The nose of the non-age-stated whisky is every bit as dark and smoky as the classic Ardbegs you know and love, offering a bruising aroma of burnt end barbecue and dying beach bonfire embers. It’s a bit daunting at first, starting off as rather one-note until you let it settle down in glass, revealing more layers beyond pushy smoke. Let Anamorphic rest in glass for a while, lest you down sip after sip of charry, tarry peat, free of nuance. After 15 minutes or so, fruit becomes much more evident, with elements of banana and baked apples, then a significant chocolate quality, ringed with walnuts. There’s plenty of aggressive tar that lingers on the back end, but for many an Ardbeg fan, that’s just what the good doctor ordered. All told, Anamorphic doesn’t exactly shift expectations for the brand, but rather it doubles down on them. - drinkhacker.com

...This Ardbeg comes from ex-Bourbon casks with toasted heads, and the nose has touches of chili-infused chocolate, a hint of anise, and a slightly herbal character. The taste has notes of grilled citrus, chili powder, dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, and a gentle peatiness. The finish is long with a gentle smokiness and touches of dark chocolate and soft spices. Excellent! (October, 2023) 95 points - whiskycast.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Earthy, dusty, and slightly biscuity on the nose, this is a most curious Ardbeg, almost from an alternative universe. The sooty/tarry notes are clear but restrained, and are balanced out by some silky vanilla. Water opens up a myriad of herbal and floral notes- smoked etiver root, aniseed, fennel, chrysanthemum and jasmine, to name but a few. Palate: The mouthfeel is peppery and warming, and precedes an explosion of fiery, spicy flavours – chili – flavoured chocolate, bitter sweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, ground black pepper and smoked artichokes. The sooty/tarry notes build up to a crescendo of rich, smoky flavours, with an incredible, lingering aftertaste of charcoal bitter almonds and molasses.

A racy Riesling underpinned by zippy acidity.

    Aperol Aperitivo (3000ml)
    ITALY
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 11%

Reminiscent of Cointreau without the spirit backbone, Aperol is a refreshing apertif first made in 1919 by Barbieri - a small family owned company in Padua near Venice. Since then it has become Italy’s national pre-dinner drink where it claims nearly one quarter of the aperitif market. Produced using sixteen ingredients including gentian, orange essence, rhubarb and quinquennia (china bark), at only 11% abv, Aperol is light enough to enjoy again and again in many different ways. Use it as an alternative to Campari or Triple Sec. Serve it chilled on its own or long with soda, fruit juice, spirits or sparkling wine.

Other reviews... The Aperol Spritz is a perennial favorite cocktail — but I can’t say that I’ve ever actually drank much Aperol on its own. Until now! An aperitif that is often shelved alongside Campari (the same company now makes both), this liqueur’s most noteworthy ingredient (not including sugar) is bitter orange, though a host of other bitter roots are also used to give it its flavor. Lighter in color and much less bitter than Campari, the spirit is a bittersweet beauty. The up-front sweetness can be a little cloying, with a viscous body and spun sugar character that approaches cough syrup, but once that passes, its complexities take hold. Aperol offers gentle bitterness on the back end, with notes of chocolate and root beer leading to a pleasant, dessert-like finish. Not too lasting, the sweet and bitter eventually meld into a cohesive whole as the liqueur finally fades away. Aperol can be used as an alternative to Campari in almost any cocktail — particularly if you’re not looking for the bitter wallop to the senses that Campari provides. For even more fun, use it as an alternative to Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or any other triple sec and see what the slug of bitterness does to your favorite cocktail. - drinkhacker.com

...Sophisticated and delightful aromas of tangerine and rhubarb. The palate entry is delightfully citrusy and sweet; the midpalate phase offers just enough herbal bitterness to balance. Ends up refreshing, orangey sweet and delectably herbal. This deserves to become a popular pre-dinner quaff. 93 points  - wineenthusiast.com

Other reviews... Worth noting is the rising alcohol strength, which could—just an observation—suggest a focus on malt enthusiasts rather than the wider public, which seems increasingly drawn to lightness, if not outright superficiality, in all things. Right. Colour: gold. Nose: indeed, not the rather light and airy malt one might have expected a few years back; on the contrary, it has presence, even a certain weight, with spicy notes on the nose, sunflower oil, very ripe apple, orange cake, exotic fruit jam, as well as Sichuan pepper and even a wee touch of curry. Style-wise, it seems to lean somewhat towards that other great Orkney name. Mouth: very fruity but with a lovely mentholated touch, almost medicinal, certainly a little salty, though it remains on pineapple and apple. Gradually shifting towards allspice, with a bit of turmeric and caraway. A small spoonful of mashed potato. Finish: great length, beautifully stewed fruits complemented by spices—pepper, turmeric, nutmeg, mint, ginger… Roasted pineapple lingers in the aftertaste. Comments: I forgot to mention the honeyed side. This is very good, with active oak, no doubt about it. Glad to see Scapa back! 85 points - whiskyfun.com

    Bottle
    $899.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Other reviews... part of the Signature blends which include the Barbados 5, the XO, Grand Anejo and Xaymaca — these are what one might infer are entry level rums for the curious (to call them ‘premium’ would be a stretch). They are neither bartenders’ mixing staples like the Three Star, OFTD or Original Dark, nor expensive limited editions like the upscale Extreme, Single Cask or Vintage series, and exist in a kind of everyman’s universe where “reasonableness” is the watchword. It goes down easy without reaching and that may be the key observation. Overall, it’s a relatively simple rum compared to others I’ve had (including some from Plantation themselves), yet a rum one can, with care and lowered expectations, have neat without too many issues. To be honest, I thought the rum was better than it had a right to be considering the sweetening Plantation is known for...  For someone now getting into rum, it’s serviceable and they could use it as a stepping stone to get more into the field, though for getting into the Barbados style it’s useless, so forget that aspect. Those with more experience can use it as a bellwether for what to look for in Plantation’s successively more upscale (and expensive) offerings; and for those who’re really into rums, well, there’s not much to say to them, since they already know all there is to know. - thelonecaner.com

... From just before Plantation became Planteray, for reasons that remain a little unclear to us—though seemingly a bit on the ‘woke’ side. We’ve nothing against wokism, of course, but we do rather like balance in all things and tend to think anything excessive becomes trivial. ‘Does ‘habitation’ still work by the way? Right then, shall we have a taste?... This must be from W.I.R.D., owned by the same fine folks. Colour: white wine. Nose: cooked sugar verging on ‘petit boulé’, sugarcane syrup and a generous splash of orgeat, with a few fluttering florals hovering about—white clover in particular, adding a faint pastoral lift. Mouth: pleasant at first, but the sweetness does rather take over. Think Malibu laced with molasses honey and sweet woodruff cordial. Finish: medium in length, gentle and sugary, with no real parting bite. Comments: clearly meant to be served over a good handful of ice, ideally dragged down to 8°C or so. In that context, it might even do the trick. At room temperature, however, it's a different story altogether. 70 points - whiskyfun.com

Vermouth enthusiasts will be glad to find what has been described as Noilly Prat's 'distillery edition' now in Australia. First offered in 1986, Ambre's distribution has remained modest, mainly limited to European markets. It's produced in a similar fashion to the Original Dry, however it includes additional botanicals (totaling 49 compared to 25) such as cinnamon from Sri Lanka, cardamom from India and coriander and rose buds from Morocco as well as lavender and vanilla for a richer, slightly sweeter experience. It works over ice, in a spritz with a slice of grapefruit or mixed with apple cider as a long drink. It can also be used as a substitute for other styles of vermouth in cocktails - for example, as a lighter stand-in for sweet vermouths. 16% Alc./Vol.

    Southern Comfort Whiskey Liqueur (1000ml)
    New Orleans, Louisiana, UNITED STATES
    $69. 99

    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 30%

In 1874 M.W. Heron, a bartender, developed Southern Comfort in his bar near La Rue Bourbon in New Orleans and first served it in traditional fashion from a whiskey barrel. In 1934 after a short break in production due to Prohibition, Southern Comfort introduced their current distinctive label featuring the now famous Currier and Ives lithograph of a Southern plantation house on the banks of the Mississippi. The plantation is known as "Woodland Plantation", built in 1834. Southern enthusiasts can visit the newly renovated mansion, which now operates as a nine bedroom country inn.

Southern's identity as a bourbon lies only in its origins. Its inception was in an awful whisky batch that Heron was attempting to improve. Actually, Southern Comfort was originally a Peach Liqueur, and one of the few peach liqueurs on the market. Produced using neutral spirit and over 100 ingredients, the final liqueur matured for eight months prior to bottling.

Since then the formula has changed and Southern is now branded a 'whiskey liqueur'. Sweet and rich with a molasses background and faint medicinal flavour, it's America’s “Take it easy Drink”. Enjoy it straight, on the rocks or with cola.

    Cognac, FRANCE

    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Before establishing the company in Jarnac, and as his father Emmanuel did before him, Felix Courvoisier worked in close association with the Gallois family, important wholesalers in wine and spirits in Bercy. As loyal suppliers to the Imperial Court, they had been honoured with Napoleon’s visit at their warehouses in 1811. Legend has it that Napoleon made sure to bring several barrels of cognac on the ship which took him to St Helen, a treat much appreciated by English officers who named it 'The Brandy of Napoleon'. Courvoisier exclusively uses Ugni Blanc grapes, from the four finest crus of the Cognac region: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. Courvoisier has contracts with more than 1,000 vine growers’ families, who have been linked to the brand for generations.

The double distillation process is specific to cognac, and takes place in a traditional Charentais pot still made of red copper. Produce from the first distillation, the 'brouillis' is distilled a second time for 'La Bonne Chauffe' (The Good Heating). The distiller must then separate the final product into three parts: the heads, the heart (the young cognac, a clear and pure eau-de-vie at 70% ABV), and finally the tails. The stills work day and night from the beginning of November until the 31st of March. Unlike many of its competitors and because a smaller still allows better control of the quality and complexity of the young cognac, Courvoisier uses only the latter for both distillations.

Other reviews... Showing bright topaz in the glass, this Cognac entices with rich, concentrated caramel and toffee aromas. Fleetingly sweet on the palate, vanilla, mocha and hazelnut lead into a rounded brown-sugar finish punctuated by clove and orange peel. This easy sipper would be welcome at any dessert table. Made with a blend of Cognacs aged 11–25 years. 95 points - wineenthusiast.com

From eaux de vie 11 to 25 years old. On the nose, it’s immediately heavy on almond/marzipan notes, then dried fruits, baking spice, and toasty wood. On the palate, it’s immediately sweet with slightly winey notes, with cherry overtones — bold, but far from overwhelming, and not incredibly complex. A little menthol creeps in on the finish, along with a touch of pepper plus some vaguely soapy notes. All told it’s a perfectly credible cognac, though it doesn’t drink as particularly old or austere. I think it might be the only XO I’ve tried that I’d have no qualms about using to mix a Sidecar. - drinkhacker.com

Deep amber copper color. Complex aromas of ginger cookie, anise seed, fig bread, suede, praline and vanilla pudding follow through on a round, supple entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body with tangy dried citrus, cola, and cocoa notes. Finishes with a long, smooth, warming fade. A very elegant, nuanced and stylish XO. International Review of Spirits Award: Gold Medal

Off the market for several years, this island gem is finally back sporting new packaging. Located on the mainland of Orkney, one of a group of islands off Scotland's northern coast, also home to one of Scotland's most revered distilleries, Highland Park. Scapa's unique flavour profile has been attributed to their water source, one that contains peat, but also involves a comprehensive pipe system from source to distillery which reduces exposure to contaminants on the water's journey. Scapa's barley is malted without the use of peat smoke, yet some peat influence can be found, though not in a smoky form, rather it comes across as added depth, richness or sweetness. Because it's matured in warehouses close to the sea, in some minds this contributes to its salty tang.

Following Pernod Ricard's change of direction for the brand, what was once a charming and unusual whisky was re-positioned as a "luxury" label, heavily filtered and bottled at an entry level ABV while proudly proclaiming it's bold and smooth characteristics. For some, this new styled Scapa was appealing, for others, a tragedy. Hopefully the latest incarnation bottled at 48% will help to reinvigorate the brand.

Other reviews... Same elements, same battle, same manoeuvre here, with active American oak. I quite like that they seem to aim to preserve a ‘house style’ across multiple expressions rather than veering off in all directions (cabernet, PX, IPA, merlot, mizunara—you get the idea). Colour: gold. Nose: this is rather amusing, as you really feel like you’re standing in front of the same whisky, just six years older. It’s therefore rounder, more on exotic fruit preserves (banana and mango), orange blossom, honeysuckle, marmalade, but also beach sand and a hint of ‘old cellar’. Very pretty, with even a touch of ‘oceanic melon’ à la B’laddich. Mouth: same sensations, almost a concentrated version of the 10-year-old in every dimension. Beautiful notes of quince paste, oranges, and citron. Careful—high drinkability index. Finish: long, lovely, on candied fruits (orange zest) with a touch of liquorice and mint. Comments: I find this really very good. Give this one some of your precious time, you do get a bit of active white oak, but you have to look for it. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

40% ABV bottling tasted... Attractive pale gold appearance. The aroma is almost floral offering up soft scents of dilute honey and a cantaloupe like fruitiness, anticipating an easy going whisky - which this is. Plenty of honeyed malt on entry leads into a medium bodied profile featuring stone fruits, dilute honey, hints of marzipan and cocoa. Gently spicy, buttery mouthfeel on the finish. Aftertaste is clean and deliciously fresh though somewhat brief, fading with traces of toasty malt, dried fruits, hints of brine and soft spices. A departure from the brawnier Scapa we fell in love with a decade ago.

Matured in first and second-fill bourbon barrels for a minimum of 14 years, including a finish of up to 12 months in Malaga wine casks to give a luscious exotic fruit intensity and beautiful smoothness. The fruit intensity from the Malaga casks is said to further enhance the whiskey's latent sweetness.

Sourced from some of the best blocks across the region this traditionally styled Shiraz comes from one of Clare Valley’s best vintages in recent memory and delivers great bang for your buck. Maturation took place in a combination of new and seasoned American oak for a period 24 months followed by a further 18 months in stainless steel tanks that allowed for integration and softening of oak tannins.

Rich, opulent Clare Valley Shiraz redolent with a distinct mint character.

Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe blackberry and liquorice aromas leap out of the glass complimented by dark chocolate, spicy vanillin oak, subtle earthy mint and pepper notes. Rich and opulent in it’s feel, the full bodied palate is layered with cascading waves of plush dark plum and liquorice fruits infused with mint. Subtlety toasted vanillin cedar, dark chocolate and peppered earth elements lurk beneath with velvet smooth tannins carrying a sturdy underbelly. Concludes long and succulent.

Yalumba 50 Years Old Rare Aged Tawny (500ml)

    $2388.00 Dozen

Beginning in the 1960's, winemakers at Yalumba set aside small parcels of the very best tawnies for extended ageing in barrels crafted by their very own coopers. After five decades, this Rare Aged Tawny release has become rich and concentrated, and is now the perfect accompaniment to hard cheese, quince paste, roasted nuts and salted crackers.

    Other Reviews....
The NV Rare Aged Tawny 50 Years Old is hugely concentrated in all respects. Dark, almost scorched-earth notes join dried dates and figs, yet there's also a searing level of bergamot-like acidity, which helps keep things balanced and (relatively) drinkable. Of course, there's black walnuts and molasses, plenty of rancio character and tremendous length. For pure pleasure, I prefer the 30-year-old bottling, but this is very impressive.

Rich and concentrated yet showing sublime finesse this is a wonderful Cabernet that draws comparisons to the great wines of Bordeaux.

A blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec matured for 22 months in French oak. Midnight black dark red core with a dark red hue. A bounty of red currant, violet, mulberry and vanillin cedar aromas engulf the nostrils with a Bordeaux like nobility. Subtle tobacco, earth, bay leaf and spice notes lend further interest. Rich and concentrated yet showing sublime finesse, the mid weighted palate is layered with fleshy red to black currant and mulberry fruits. Spicy vanillin cedar, delicate earth, tobacco and infusions of bay leaf extend across the back half. Beautifully proportioned and refined it marriages power and depth with seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins. Concludes very long and wonderfully savoury. Outstanding.

One of the distinctive features of this wine, and in a way a DNA link to all Art Series cabernet, is its savouriness. It’s the rolled tobacco, nori, iodine and whiff of new leather plus the cedary oak, but these are not separate, they form a whole impression. There’s also the core of excellent fruit, the structure, the supple tannins and the bright acidity. And the joy of drinking it. Drink by 2036.

A fascinating wine which offers all the amazing qualities that Margaret River Cabernet possesses, but it walks the fine line with nuances of Bordeaux, more than most. It works wonderfully well. The wine incorporates 2% Malbec. All up, the wine spends 22 months in French oak. Crimson/blood red hue, it offers entrancing complexity. There are notes of tobacco leaves, black fruits, chocolate, smoked meats, licorice, a touch of ever-so-slightly charry cloves and quality oak, which is superbly handled here. A silky texture, this is a wine of balance and length with the finest tannins. Intensity runs the full length. Eerily reminiscent of an Aussie version of Bordeaux (or possibly a Bordeaux version of Marg River?). Whichever, it is a cracking wine. Drink for twelve to fifteen years. Drink 2024-2039.

Immediately captivating: the nose is vibrant and energetic, while simultaneously the epitome of elegance and poise with restrained fruit power. This is a silk evening gown of a wine: form-fitting, precisely tailored, mellifluous and effortlessly chic. Abundant in aromatics and lifted perfume, fine red fruits include wild strawberry tip, bramble and just-ripe blackcurrant, alongside hints of piquancy: Szechwan pepper, clove and a fine dusting of deep, lightly toasted cocoa powder. There’s a charismatic iodine weave, the savoury and slightly saline minerality proving a foil to both the fruit flesh and the floral hues. Displaying extremely fine-grained tannins, it's firm, focused and delicate, with a graphite line, fresh acidity and plenty that will reveal itself in good time. Tasted pre-release. Drink 2024-2046.

The 2021 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon is lighter in color and tannic intensity than the 2020 tasted beside it. No surprise for the vintages that birthed these wines. The latter was sunny, hot and dry, while the 2021 season was decidedly cooler, with more cloud cover and rain. This wine bears the fruits of the diligent labor in the vineyards and is one of the shining lights in the region this year. There are notes of raspberry and nori, moss and petrichor, blood and forest floor. This is a lighter style of Cabernet—and a lovely one at that. Drink 2025-2041.

    $1439.88 Dozen

Proof positive that high ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference.

Sheer approachability has helped Aberlour become the most popular whisky in France, where more single malt is consumed than any other country. At around 40%, it's a polite, relaxed and sometimes, slightly wanting tasting experience. As an alternative for those who prefer sherry with a kick, owners Pernod-Ricard introduced the natural strength A'bunadh around 2000. Eighteen years later, Casg Annamh was launched as a French Exclusive in a similar vein (the name translates from the Gaelic as “rare cask”). Also influenced by Oloroso, it's matured in three types of casks: European oak Sherry casks and two different types of American oak . Like A'bunadh, Casg Annamh is batch specific, with about ten iterations to date, some better than others. Whichever you come across, they're all handsomely packaged with a wax seal stopper, while the extra ABV and zero chill filtration makes a world of difference. 48% Alc./Vol.

Refined, mid weighted Cabernet Sauvignon with Langhorne Creek’s characteristic mintiness.

From 50 year old vines with maturation taking place in French oak barriques for 20 months. Dense inky black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Aromas of blackcurrant and liquorice combine with mint, dusty vanillin cedar and bay leaf notes. Made from 94/5/1% cabernet sauvignon/malbec/petit verdot; 20 months in French oak, 30% new. This delivers strong blackcurrant flavours with cedarwood, spearmint and eucalypt flavours attached. It's well scented, well flavoured and well finished, with unobtrusive tannin and a juiciness all the way through, the latter complemented by well-integrated oak. Drink by 2032.
