Planted in '99, the Indigo Vineyard, in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, has a reputation for fine chardonnay. This is a lovely example, lemon-scented and intense with refined pomelo and white peach flavours. The wine is defined by an acid line, which gives focus, freshness and length. Winemaking artefact has been seamlessly integrated to give the wine an extra dimension rather than a counter melody. Whole-bunch-pressed grapes with natural fermentation in French oak (100% new). Boasts the lifted aromatic cool climate qualities of Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir with some oomph. Harmony reigns on the bouquet in chocolate and spice, black cherry and plum, five spice and aniseed. Runs generous and long with supple tannins allowing a good build-up across the palate of delicious, juicy red fruits, plum and spice with a pinch of dried herbs. A good follow up to the ’22 highlighting the estate’s rounded, soft hearted, fruit-filled Pinot Noir winemaking ethos. And like the ’22, has enough in reserve for the cellar as well as for earlier enjoyment. Based on a barrel selection from what was, according to general consensus, a terrific vintage with plenty of finesse on display in the region’s Pinot. Drink 2024-2030.

The fruit for this excellent chardonnay comes from various vineyards in the Great Southern in what was a superb year. It’s a fine and delicately structured wine with terrific flavour intensity throughout. Notes of typical floral white peach, minerals and a trace of popcorn character all captured in the opening. The palate is finely balanced with texture and intensity. A slightly flinty struck match character lurking behind completes a beautiful palate. Cellar 10 years.

RayJordanWine.com.auA mix of vineyards from Albany, Denmark and Mt Barker, and a set of clones that includes WA’s renowned Gin Gin variation. The 2023 ripening season was colder and longer than average, and the fruit clearly appreciated it, coming from the glass at first with plenty of fruit punch and tight, earthy aromatics, followed by a surging palate wave of spiced peach and yellow grapefruit flavours. That spice is a subtle ginger thrill – thank the Gin Gin clone for that – as well as nuanced French oak in support, 35% of that new and humbly supportive. Now we add up all of this and the sum is bloody delicious, bright and refreshing wine that celebrates the Chardonnay grape in this particular regional home with a most respectful touch of winemaking. Bravo.

2021 Produttori del Barbaresco BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$105. 00Bottle$1260.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkProduttori del Barbaresco is a cooperative of 51 growers that controls more than 250 acres of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. This wine is blend of Nebbiolo fruit harvested from different vineyards. In great vintages they also produce nine single vineyard Barbaresco’s located within the Barbaresco village boundaries of Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo.

This wine gives us our first taste of the epic 2021 vintage from a producer as prolific as Produttori del Barbaresco. Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. However, the wine maintains its youthful tension and energy throughout. The tannins are chalky, fine and void of any bitterness. This is a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas. Drink 2026-2045.

James SucklingThis is likely the best vintage I’ve tasted of this wine.
Dark cherry, raspberry, mint, sage and liquorice root, baking spices, and a whole lot of dried flower perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, dense and ripe, packed with dark red fruit, something quite earthy and stony, especially with its deep and ferrous grainy tannin, and there’s black tea and floral mouth-perfume, fresh too, with a firm finish of outstanding length. In 2021 this standard wine is up to riserva quality.

Lots of satisfied reviews from tasters at whiskybase.com, et al. leave the impression that this is one of the finer Dalmores of the last decade. Bottled in 2017 at 44% Alc./Vol.Other reviews... I was very interested in this whisky, because I really like the Port Finish's. First, the whisky is very pricey, second, the whisky is awesome! I was very surprised what it offers for a great and varied aroma. Dark fruits, raisins, oranges, nuts and honey. There are also beautiful spicy notes and a long and warm finish. He looks very mature and round. The 44% are exactly right here. As I said, it costs a lot of money, but it's worth it! Too bad, I would like more of Dalmore's whiskys and preferably a little cheaper. - whiskybase.com

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.

Attractive pear and lime scents laced with wet stone and an oyster shell like minerality drift through the nostrils with ample volume. Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Wheat & Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 46.2%What some might call a double-malt, this limited release forms part of the distillery's new Small Batch Series. Contrasting deep virgin-oak driven flavour with the fruitiness of malted wheat and barley, the style bridges the bourbon and single malt category; sweet and soft like classic wheated styles (think Weller), but heavier and richer with the malt adding body and texture, it’s hard to tell where the grains end and the oak begins. Creamy flavours of muesli, vanilla, sticky date and milk chocolate are beautifully meshed alongside budding fruitiness. If you're looking for a delicious, seductive end-of-the-night sipper, this ticks all the boxes, however it's best over ice or left uncut. Minimal dilution quickly thins out the flavours. Batch No. 001 weighs in at 46.2% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... On the nose it’s vanilla, and banana. On the tongue it’s orchard fruits, followed by hint of banana again, all wrapped in our signature virgin American oak flavours - toffee and vanilla bean.

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
Keen-eyed observers will note that this special release from a refill sherry hogshead was exclusive to the American retailer, K&L Wines. Just 208 bottles made up the 2017 outturn which has long since sold out. At 49.5% Alc./Vol., it's at natural cask strength and comes non chill filtered. The dark, rich colour of the malt lets you know at first glance that this is going to be one supple dram. While sherried Bowmore tends toward savoury campfire notes and sherried Kilchoman towards sweet peat, sherried Bunnahabhain is like pure salted caramel. Enthusiastic notes below from K&L's spirits buyer, David Othenin-Girard:"Wow I mean just what the hell? We've had a string of wonderful Bunnahs over the last year, the result I believe of the distillery's change in ownership. When the new owners took a look at all the old whisky in the warehouse that they didn't own, I bet they sent a few thousand letters on fancy legal paper. Rent is going up! Anyway, we're the great beneficiaries of that business acumen. Other independents have taken the good name and the old age and jacked the prices up, but we've got some good old friends in bonny Scotland who treat us well. The dark color forces a double take when it hits the glass. Refill? Dang! It must have been a fresh dump if you catch my drift, but it's balanced and absolutely filled to the brim with life. The nose is nuts and orange liqueur by the sea. Dark fruit salted. Tobacco leaf and cedar pointed by subtle salted and stewed red fruit quality. Touches of dried kelp, freshly polished leather and no obvious peat. The sweetness of the nose is balanced by the rich savory entry on the palate. It's a big one! Nice and dry with a big oak spice pulling through in the back. Truly a special cask, one of the best values we'll ever offer."

"n24 One of those gold hued, pure magic casks with the marks of Hurst and Moore upon it. Forty years on and the sherry is still lashing it out with rich toffee apple, soft natural caramels and moist fruitcake. Not even the hint of an off note to be had; t24 mouth-watering barley...after all this time!! And then layer upon layer of sherry of varying viscosity and intensity. Lush, lithe and latently spicy; the oak is naturally deep but never gets caught out of position and knows exactly when to pass; f24 still developing as a touch of Jaffa cake sweetens the vanilla and coating of dark chocolate. After an almost world record number of taste waves for a non-peated cask, very late on even lighter, fresher fruits. There's some peaches running on to the palate. They think it's all over: it is now...; b24 this cannot be in any way confused with England's bid to win the 2006 World Cup. Because this has style, charisma, shape, purpose, the ability to attack, plenty in reserve and the unmistakable pedigree and aura of something that can not only match just about anything else in the world, but beat it. Ironically, the label says Butt - which sums up to the English France's World Cup comeuppance. And WC, which nutshells the French (and everyone else) England's quality of management and play...This is one of the great single cask malts of my lifetime. - Le Gin de Christian Drouin Pira Gin (700ml)Normandy, FRANCE$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 42%
Pira is made according to the same principles as the original version of Guillaume Drouin's Le Gin; each botanical is macerated and re-distilled separately in order to optimise the extraction of aromas. The Perry pear takes centre stage in this edition, along with juniper, vanilla, lemon, black pepper and Iris root. A small pear with a subtle aroma combining acidity and tannins, it is the other emblematic fruit of Normandy. In the Pays d'Auge, pear trees are generally planted on the edge of apple orchards. These long-lived and quite large trees can reach more than 15 metres high, with deep roots, forming excellent windbreaks for more fragile apple orchards.
Pira gin offers aromas and flavours of white fruits, black pepper and iris and can be enjoyed neat or as a gin and tonic, with a thin slice of pear or elderflower as a garnish. 42% Alc./Vol.

Blanton’s has its place in history as being the first Single Barrel Bourbon, setting the standard for others to follow by creating a new 'super-premium' bourbon category. Quite simply, the product is aged in one barrel, and unlike most others, never blended with other bourbon. The principle behind the concept is that each barrel of Bourbon varies, and the whiskey in it acquires a slightly different flavour profile. Furthermore, where barrels are stored in a warehouse, the immediate environment can make a considerable impact on how the whiskey matures. The master distiller periodically samples the whiskey in barrels, especially those barrels in the best part of the warehouse. (Usually this is the very center of the warehouse, called 'the heart' of the warehouse. ) Those barrels that are discovered to contain unusually fine whiskey are recorded and tracked with care. There is no margin for error because there is no way to compensate for flavour by mixing the spirit with any other liquid at a later period. At considerable expense to the distillery, the selected barrels are allowed to mature in years far beyond the average age of Bourbon. When they are at their peak of perfection, they are taken from the warehouse -- one by one -- and bottled one barrel at a time and then packaged by hand. In this way the cream of the crop, so to speak, becomes single barrel Bourbon. The intended result is a new classic every time: unfiltered, uncut - Bourbon of a most individual expression. As a consequence, each bottling can vary in style and flavour.
Blanton's first Single Barrel release was in 1984. It was named after Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton, who in 1901 at the age of twenty became superintendent of the distillery. It was reportedly a labor of love for Blanton who led the enterprise as the only working distillery in Kentucky during Prohibition (1920 to 1933) and had the distillery back and running within 24 hours of the floodwaters subsiding following the great flood of 1937. Master Distiller Elmer T. Lee, Member of the Master Distiller's Hall of Fame, oversaw the introduction of single barrel bourbons. Current Master Distiller, Gary Gayheart, carries on the tradition. All Blanton's Bourbons are superbly packaged in a jewel-like decanter. The tiny horse and jockey on the bottle stoppers have become a trademark of Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon. Blanton's have produced a collectors edition set of eight different stoppers, with horse and jockey in different strides and poses. Each stopper is marked with a single letter that spells Blanton’s when the set has been completed.
Other reviews... Copper hue. Sweet vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit, aromas are appealing. Supple on the palate with rich toffee, allspice, and pepper notes. Has a great balance between dryness and fruity sweetness that tapers to a smooth finish.

Blanton’s made industry headlines when Master Distiller, Elmer T. Lee introduced the brand in the 1980s as the very first commercially available single-barrel Bourbon. It was named after the former President, Colonel Albert Bacon Blanton, who in 1901 became the Distillery Superintendent at just twenty years of age (he was also the President of the George T. Stagg until 1952 - now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery). A labour of love saw the enterprise become the only working producer in Kentucky during Prohibition (1920 to 1933). Later, following the great flood of 1937, Blanton had the operation back and running within 24 hours of the waters subsiding. Legend has it that the Colonel had a knack for selecting “honey barrels”, bottling them as gifts for ambassadors, dignitaries, family and friends. All of these barrels came from the middle section of Warehouse H, the only single story, metal-sided warehouse at the distillery, which is said to cause the aging spirit to interact with the oak at a steadier rate, meaning Blanton’s can be bottled at just 6 to 8 years of age and taste mature. That said, the age of Blanton's varies from bottle to bottle depending on the Master Distiller's discretion, which is why they've always been NAS releases.
Blanton’s is further distinguished by its use of a higher percentage of corn than most other Bourbons, although the team at Buffalo Trace continue to keep the mash bill a guarded secret. Part of its popularity must be down to the allure of the packaging: The unmistakable multi-faceted squat decanters topped by a tiny horse and jockey have become a trademark and simply make the brand feel special. Up until just a few years ago, it was relatively easy to buy a bottle of Blanton’s. Nowadays it's on the list of hardest-to-find Bourbons in America. Imports to Australia remain sporadic, so if you're keen, grab it whenever you can find it at a reasonable price.
Other reviews... The aroma shows soft, toasty notes of cornbread and cinnamon sugar with a subtle, slightly savory crème brûlée sweetness and a touch of orange zest that adds a welcome brightness. The palate is oily and sweet with a classic brown sugar and vanilla bean profile that comes across with a light, almost toasted marshmallow note, with a little bit of barrel char adding some astringency. The heat is soft at first and builds gently, along with the sweetness and baking spice. It’s really the finish that seems to be the most lackluster part of this one, as those flavors tend to dissipate a bit too soon. Blanton’s remains an incredibly approachable bourbon that still holds its own among the many single barrel bourbons that have come out since its debut. [2021 batch tasted] - drinkhacker.com...The original single barrel bourbon continues to defy odds with its ability to provide a consistent sip year after year and a flavor profile that defines approachable. Blanton’s Original Single Barrel is the age defying brand that continues to please consumers year after year with a product that could easily vary widely barrel to barrel, yet rarely does. Its consistency delivers a classic bourbon flavor profile that will please almost anyone. While it may not be the best single barrel available at any given moment, even among its own Blanton’s siblings, it is by far and large, one of the more approachable ones. First tasted around 18 months ago this has filled out beautifully and now at nearly 50% off delivers brilliant value.
Pure seduction in a glass.
Midnight black heart with a dark red black tinged hue. Wafting through the nostrils are intense blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and dark chocolate aromas which are complimented by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, generously weighted and highly seductive, the palate features a plush textural feel with blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits rolling over a spicy vanillin cedar, subtle earthy mocha and peppered fennel back drop. Concentrated and powerful yet relatively refined in its feel, it boasts velvet smooth tannins and a long sumptuous finish.

Sam Kim – Wine Orbit - Glenfarclas 15 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Gift Pack with 2 GlassesSpeyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$169. 99Bottle$2039.88 DozenABV: 46%
Comes with two Glenfarclas branded Glencairn whisky glasses.
Famous as one of Speyside’s most masculine whiskies, Glenfarclas 15 is matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the sherry. Bottled at 46%, the result is one of most full-bodied in the Glenfarclas stable. It's also one that tasters tend to notice the most batch variation in. Re-tasted in early 2022, the latest bottling takes some time to develop and blow off minor sulphur blemishes. Aromas pick up speed, echoed in attractively sherried flavours of raisin cake, fruit mince pie and digestif biscuits. The finish adds suggestions of pickled ginger and baking spices. Though not long, the flavours are surprisingly intense, well-proportioned and approachable without dilution. Give a freshly opened bottle thirty minutes to begin to show its best. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Some classic sherried Speysider that everyone should have tried. WF 84 last time I had, but that was in… 2006 (feeling shame here at WF Towers). Colour: gold. Nose: not that different from the 10, just cake-ier, more sherried, and rather more complex, with small herbs, a mossy side, and a large chocolate cake. Touches of yeasty porridge in the background. Fresh pumpernickel bread. Mouth: really very cake-y, malty, with raisins and some very lovely touches of spearmint. I’m also finding a delicate wood smoke, as well as the usual walnuts when we’re having a sherried malt such as this one. Goody good. Finish: rather long, and shall I dare mention Christmas cakes? And yet it’s not heavy. Comments: I just couldn’t tell you which one I like best, between the 10 and the 15. Both are top class in their categories. 46% Alc.Vol. 84 points - whiskyfun.com
...Energetic, heady, rich. Wakes up the palate and demands to be heard. The marshmallow note is uncanny and overpowers the rest of the dram at points, but overall this regains its footing, albeit with a somewhat abbreviated finish. All in, a step up from the 12 year old expression and solid value for money. - malt-review.com

Drawing on Tahbilk estate plantings of Grenache and Mourvèdre the fruit for this moreish Rose is picked early to retain freshness and delicacy, with the grapes crushed and pressed with as little oxygen contact as possible to preserve the fresh fruit characters. A technique favoured in Provence is then used to increase texture and mouthfeel, by mixing the cold juice (including the pulp and solids) with nitrogen gas briefly each day over four days. The wine is then racked to produce clear juice and fermented with a specific Rosé yeast.
Produced from a blend of 68% Grenache and 32% Mourvedre it features a translucent salmon pink tinged colour and an enchanting nose that offers up delightful aromatics of raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate followed by a faint whiff of wet stone. Intensely flavoured and gorgeously shaped, the palate is layered with delicious raspberry, pomegranate and musk flavours which sit over a strawberry and wet stone back drop. Showing brisk underlying acidity it finishes dry, supple and long. Fantastic value.

Other reviews... I've informally tried a few Armenian brandies last month, including this baby, and I must say I've been positively surprised. Colour: amber. Nose: it's probably a little rougher than the Fussigny but there's more happening than in the two previous ones. For example, there is a little smoke, some menthol and touches of putty that add dimension. As far as fruits are concerned, I rather find cassis and the expected raisins. Mouth: this baby has no cause to be jealous of the previous cognacs. It may have a little too much sugar again but it's not molassy and it's got this very pleasant jamminess that would involve blackcurrants again as well as dates and figs. Finish: not very long and maybe a little molassy now. Or a tad sluggish. Comments: it's less complex than the Fussigny and loses points because of that, but it's high quality brandy, no doubt about that. 76 points - whiskyfun.com

The Detailed review: Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.
Semi translucent dark red core with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exhibiting a perfumed like intensity, the nose is engulfed with dark cherry, violet, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents. Anise, brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice notes also chime in to lend further interest. Expansive, concentrated and supplely textured, rich dark cherry and strawberry fruits unfold across the palate with terrific power. Extending through the back half are complexing notions of subtle rhubarb, traces of anise, brambly cedar, dried herbs, delicate forest floor and spice. Velvet smooth tannins impart a silken feel which carries right through to a long, incredibly moreish finish. This is Rob Hall in top form.

A super-fresh if somewhat brooding nose is comprised by notes of essence of red pinot fruit, spice and lavender that really helped from being in a decanter for 30 minutes first. The succulent and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality before concluding in a compact, powerful, complex and impressively persistent finish. This seems to have put on weight since I last reviewed it and I like the overall sense of harmony and balance. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 10, 2020)The 2018 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has the most intense bouquet of Dominique Lafon’s Volnays this year, intense black cherry scents intermingling with boysenberry and light cassis aromas, all delivered with the utmost detail. The palate offers black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with violets, very fine tannins and gentle grip. The silky-smooth finish fans out gloriously. Stunning. Drink 2023-2050.

Neal Martin - VinousFine depth of colour. The nose from the start suggests that this is a complete wine. Plums as much as dark raspberries, with its clay based weight, a few tannins but in proportion to the fruit, just the right thread of acidity, a fabulous weighty but balanced Volnay Santenots.
